Spark Plug Wires

On this page, the SBC, BBC, and LT Gen-V kits are premade, meaning they come terminated for that specific engine and distributor setup with the right lengths and boot angles to drop right in. The universal kits come with the wire and loose terminals, so you cut each wire to your exact length and crimp both the coil end and distributor end with the included tool. Premade is the faster install if there's a kit for your engine. Universal gives you full routing control on a custom or unusual build.

A solid metal conductor, like a plain copper wire core, passes spark fine but dumps a lot of electrical noise that can interfere with your EFI electronics, gauges, and other sensitive components. The Ferro-Spiral core wraps a fine conductor in a spiral to deliver low resistance and a strong spark while suppressing that noise. For an EFI build, you want low-resistance spiral core wires, not solid core.

Two things matter around headers: heat and routing. The ceramic boots withstand up to 2,000 degrees F, so they hold up against close-tolerance headers where standard boots melt and fail. The premade SBC and BBC kits come in different distributor-end and boot-angle setups to clear common headers, and each includes two extra unterminated wires for routing around a tight exhaust manifold. For an unusual header, a universal cut-to-length kit gives you the most control.

It's a good idea. Fresh wires deliver a stronger, cleaner spark, so pairing them with new spark plugs set to the correct plug gap gets the most out of the upgrade. Worn plugs with a wide spark plug gap or resistor plugs at the end of their life can still cause a misfire even with new wires. Choosing the correct plug wire and matching plugs together keeps the whole ignition system consistent.

Common signs of worn wires include misfires, rough idle, hard starting, and a visible spark or arcing from the wires in a dark engine compartment. Cracked insulation, burned boots, or high resistance on old stock wires all point to a replacement.
